Thodos Dance Chicago presented its 23rd anniversary benefit, Chicago Inspired, at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance on March 7. A two-hour exploration of contemporary dance kicked off the evening and included works by Broadway legend and Chicago native Bob Fosse as well as present-day creations from cutting edge choreographers. A gala celebration followed on the Pritzker Pavilion’s glass enclosed stage in Millennium Park.

Over 900 dance lovers enjoyed a program that included a world premiere, Near Light, choreographed by company founder/artistic director Melissa Thodos as well as contemporary pieces presented by ensemble members John Cartwright and Tenley Dorrill. During intermission, Thodos Dance Chicago Youth Ensemble members performed in the lobby while onlookers enjoyed Garrett’s Popcorn, champagne and cocktails.

A highlight of the performance was a revival of the Fosse Trilogy, a trio of works from Fosse’s 1960s archives, with new choreography by Broadway legend Ann Reinking. Guest choreographer Garfield Lemonius’ world premiere of Memoirs closed the show with the entire company dancing in bright red dresses.

Following the show, a saxophonist served as pied piper, leading more than 150 guests backstage for a reception in the Green Room that featured the event’s signature cocktail, a Fosse Fizz.

The party continued on the Pritzker Pavilion stage with dramatic views of the city’s skyline and dancing to DJ Jive Fresh. In keeping with the Chicago Inspired theme, Food Evolution Catering and Events offered hors d’oeuvres inspired by the city’s neighborhoods.

Co-chaired by Kim Gleeson, Cheri Lawrence and Courtney Pitt, the gala raised more than $35,000 for the company’s programming and community outreach. Thodos Dance Chicago offers an array of educational outreach programs that include in-school performances, assembly programs and residencies.
